About Us
We believe in supporting and guiding families as they raise strong, independent, confident kids who succeed in the classroom and beyond.
Our Philosophy
At The Chicago Family Tutor, we provide structure, routine, and support while encouraging students to move beyond their comfort zone so that they can see just how smart, powerful, and capable they truly are.
Research has shown that authoritative parenting, characterized by high demands and high responsiveness, is the most beneficial for kids. This is the approach that we take with our students. We have high expectations, but we provide the support, guidance, and praise necessary to sustain these expectations and to help students achieve them.

Lindsay Zoeller
Owner & Founder
Over the last 25 years, Lindsay has worked with hundreds of children and their families through her work as a babysitter, nanny, family law practitioner, teacher, and tutor.
She graduated from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign with a bachelor's degree in Psychology, and a J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law.
While in law school, her desire to help families began to emerge, and she focused this interest by specializing in Family Law. Shortly after law school graduation, Lindsay embarked upon a period of soul searching and self-reflection. She realized that this desire was served better through education rather than litigation. Lindsay became an Illinois-certified educator in 2012, and she has been true to her calling ever since.

Joshua Shuster
Tutor, Academic Coach, Executive Function Coach
Joshua Shuster
My purpose is to help others succeed in life. Helping others, like myself, who have had little to no modeling or representation on how to navigate these tumultuous times is my true calling and pioneering the way for them is even more rewarding.
I have a background in Biology and Education-psychology, as well as training and being certified to coach educators and entrepreneurs. This has allowed me to coach and consult Educators on Classroom Management and Differentiated Instruction. I have work with students and their families, tutoring in certain subjects, teaching study skills, coping skills, and other learning techniques, and helping parents realize their role in their children’s success and viewing them through a more understanding and growing lense of achievement. I have worked on the board for several non-profits in reaching young minority leaders and teaching them how to best represent themselves. And most recently have been asked to be on the Miller Leadership Academy Advisory Board for Ball State University, which "is a scholarship and support program in the Miller College of Business that focuses on supporting underserved students financially, academically, and holistically."
My 18 years of working with youth and young adults, as well as entrepreneurs, has allowed me to meet people where they are and approach them with empathy.
I continue to look forward to the next family I can help and feel supported!

Throughout their career, Thomas has gained experience through hands-on experience working with students with developmental delays, skill deficits, behavior intervention needs, executive function support, academic support, and other exceptionalities. They have worked directly in the special education classroom setting as teachers for the last 5 years, and prior to that worked one on one with students, primarily with an ASD diagnosis. Thomas is adept at providing support for Pre-K-8 academic subjects, emphasizing teaching social and emotional skills directly.
Thomas’s teaching philosophy is that the primary goals of the sessions should be motivated by the students, and that ultimately we are striving for independence and self-advocacy by building the skills needed to achieve these goals. It may take time, it may be frustrating, and that is ok. Learning to regulate through these emotions is another skill that can be practiced and realized.
Every student works differently and has their own opinions about their learning. Collaboration is a key component to working with Thomas. Understanding the needs/wants of the families and students, Thomas strives to create clear and achievable goals and benchmarks that allow everyone to see the progress they are making, and if they are not, consider why and reframe our efforts to see if there are better ways to learn.
In their spare time, Thomas can be found skating by the Lake, or moseying about new neighborhoods trying to find hidden gems to tell people about.

Tom Keating
Tutor, Academic Coach, Test Prep
Tom Keating
Tom is a math and science coach with a PhD in Electrical Engineering.
He has worked with children and adults learning math from pre-algebra through college-level math, as well as science including biology, chemistry, physics and more. Tom has tutored for over 25 years, and has helped numerous students with preparedness for entrance exams and standardized tests. He served as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas Austin, and has taught high school math and science in Texas and Illinois.
Tom’s approach to math is to help students identify patterns and develop mathematical thinking that can guide them in problem solving with confidence. A key aspect of this approach is to develop high-level thinking about problems, not just the nuts and bolts of solution mechanics. Tom stresses the practicality and usefulness of math in terms of real-world applications. In science, the approach is similar, with an emphasis on how science applies to all the things around us in our daily life.
He brings executive functiont to math and science by ensuring that students practice the top-down view of these subjects, not just learning the mechanics and nitty-gritty. Students are often coached to ask ‘does this make sense’ as they work through problems, and are also coached to ‘step back’ to view what they have done, so that the whole of their connected efforts can be seen to fit together.
For younger learners and especially those struggling with math, Tom puts math and science into plain English to ensure understanding. He has worked with students having various learning challenges and brings an approachable, humorous view to put students at ease, and believes in bringing a sense of wonder to science and technology.
Tom has traveled extensively, visiting over 30 countries, and speaks fluent German and basic Mandarin. His hobbies include cooking, working out and occasionally, advising hi tech startups on strategy.
